Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are probing a shooting incident that occurred on the evening of April 18 at Howe Community Park in the Arden-Arcade area as authorities were breaking up a large unsanctioned party of a crowd of several hundred.
How It Started
Deputies first arrived at the park around 6:30 in the evening after receiving reports of persons possibly in possession of concealed Sacramento park shooting 2026 weapons. After that, a second call came in concerning a possible fight breaking out inside the park.
Air support searched from above but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Despite this, it was apparent that a crowd of several hundred had packed into the park without official sanction.
The Shooting Itself
Deputies began the process of clearing the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and announcing over their public address systems directing the hundreds present to leave immediately. Roughly 15 minutes were provided for individuals to vacate.
Just as the crowd began to move that 20 to 25 gunshots were discharged. The barrage of gunfire triggered a stampede. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies at once began locating gunshot victims.
Four Victims Hospitalized
When the dust settled, four shooting victims were located with gunshot injuries. Those injured — consisting of one woman and three men all reportedly in their mid to late twenties — were taken to local Sacramento hospitals. Doctors and nurses stated that two had critical injury classifications, one of the four had moderate gunshot wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. Fortunately, all four were expected to survive.
Metro Fire Sacramento were called to the scene and provided medical assistance the four victims on location.
The Investigation
The bulk of the shooting was confirmed to have unfolded on Cottage Way close to the Home Depot store located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Crime scene investigators recovered additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Bullet holes were discovered in the wrought iron perimeter fencing near the nearby Home Depot. This ballistic evidence indicated that at least one shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was put under lockdown as a precaution. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives worked tirelessly for hours.
Suspect Information
Information relayed via scanner audio indicated that a Kia connected to the shooting was intercepted in Solano County. Four detainees were detained. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were traveling to Solano County to return them to Sacramento for investigation. Footage analyzed by investigators showed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
